Suffolk latches are one of the most evocative period pieces available to you if you are creating an authentic feel and atmosphere within your restoration project. The principle of the latch hasn't changed in centuries, although the designs and styles have. We at Hand Forged have two styles of latch, the Bean Thumbatch and the Gothic Thumblatch, with the Bean style being the most popular of designs. Suffolk latches are commonly used on internal plank or ledged and braced doors in older style properties, whether it be the old kitchen or pantry door, bedroom and bathroom doors, or as an external latch to your front gate or to open the shed door. Usually used in conjunction with our range of T hinges to create the feel of a bygone era.
To work the latch the thumb piece passes through the door and raises the latch bar, or lifter, off the keep. To restrict the latch bar movement a staple pin is provided or a more ornate screw on staple can be used. Can also be used to lock a room, like a bathroom or toilet, by using a locking staple pin which is supplied with a leather thong and pin to stop the movement of the latch bar.
All our items are sold as sets, come complete with all necessary fixing screws, come in different sizes to fit all thickness of door and are designed to suit any of our T hinges. All the accessories can also be purchased as single items in case you happen to misplace any.
